Not many other compact digital cameras can trigger a remote Canon Speedlite flash wirelessly, but the G9 can.

If you own a Canon digital SLR and already have the ST-E2 infrared wireless flash transmitter and a Canon flash, it’s a cinch to achieve the same wireless flash functionality with the G9.

Here are some sample photos by flash_691 – same setup and lighting equipment (Canon 580EX flash), but different cameras, the G9 vs Canon 40D.

Here are some tips on how to properly set up the Canon G9 for wireless flash photography with the ST-E2.

In conclusion, if you’re taking the G9 to the beach, or kayaking or the like and need to protect the camera from sand, water or dust, consider going the economical route and getting a Ziploc bag or two (the sandwich versions should do).

Also, be sure to place some silica gel packs inside the Ziploc (or ziplock-type) bags to soak up the moisture within the bag.

Discussion on the amount of battery drain when the G9 is powered off

Volkerm1 asked about battery longevity when the G9 is in power off state. He notices that if the camera isn’t used for a week, a set of fully-charged batteries would be completely drained.

Guillermo finds that rechargeable AA batteries hold their charge better in the G9 vs the Powershot S5, and gives some advice on battery handling.

Generally, Li-Ion batteries drain much more slowly than NiMH AA batteries. There should still be a charge left in the Li-Ion even if left inside the camera for a month.

Alan reports that the battery life on the G9 can go as long as several weeks with sporadic use. Kristi reports the same. JerryK’s Canon and Sterlingtek batteries also lose very little charge when the camera is unused for several weeks.

An honest-to-goodness Canon G9 user review by Ken Tanaka.

I just love reading reviews like this – delivers the low-down, straight to the point without over-reliance on spec sheets and technical data.

Ken’s review basically concludes that the G9 is an “… exceptional little camera … “, but you’d be missing a lot if you just focused on the conclusion.

No, Ken’s gone out of the way to show the power of using Noise Ninja’s magic on an ISO 1600 shot, gave feedback on the video capability of the G9 and even shows a picture of the G7 vs G9 side-by-side – you just cannot ignore that large, 3.0-inch LCD on the back of the G9.

And yeah, you’d better get to his site quick and download the G9 RAW file (use this link since the one at his site has expired – Ken’s already given me permission to re-host the file) he’s so generously made available via the yousendit.com service, because it’s only limited to the first hundred people (I’ve already got it, and boy, the detail is super ).

Thanks Ken – your piece is very much appreciated!
